Taking Responsibilty for My Health or Why I Eat Paleo

I have had a crazy relationship with food throughout my life. My weight has fluctuated greatly over the past twenty years. I think a lot of it had to do with not thinking about what I was eating or I was following the standard myths that are perpetuated in society such as being healthy by following the food pyramid.

When I finished high school in 1992 I was as soldier in the Canadian militia and I worked full time in a lumber yard. I was lean, strong and ate like a horse. In 1994 I went to university and by 1999 I was 50 pounds overweight. I was obese and unhappy. However, January 2000 I found a program called Body for Life and it literally transformed my life. By June 2000 I dropped from 220lbs (~100kg) to 170lbs (~72kg).

Since then my weight has fluctuated a bit but I have basically been at 170lbs for the past three years.

For any of you who know me personally or follow my blog I have been doing a lot of research about the New World Order and the corruption and lies that is being faced by citizens in the western democracies. A few months ago I was listening to the Alex Jones Radio Show and heard an interview with Dr. Wallach.

Dr. Joel Wallach
Dr. Wallach spent the show discussing how vitamins and minerals can make you healthy and prevent you from getting sick. Here is another of Wallach's videos called "Dr. Wallach's Complete Lecture of Dead Doctors Don't Lie". This video tells you everything you need to know about how vitamins prevent almost every common disease.

After watching Dr. Wallach's video I purchased the Youngevity healthy Start Pack from www.deaddoctosdontlie.com and tried it for a month. I could not believe the results. I was feeling heaps better but most importantly I could smell for the first time in eight years! I couldn’t believe it. I have been taking supplements for the past three months and I can continue to smell. For those of you who don’t know when you lose your smell you lose your taste as well. Being able to smell and taste has greatly increased my quality of life.

There were a few other videos that made a huge impression on me when it came to my eating and health which I will discuss in the second part of this blog. They were:
These three videos rocked my faith in government and the medical establishment. After watching these three movies I thought to myself there has to be a better way. I then remembered vaguely that I had heard about a diet called the “Paleo Diet” a number of years ago. I did some research and it changed my life forever.

The Paleo Diet

The Paleo Diet can be summed up by eating the way our prehistoric ancestors did. By following this diet you should be able to get all of the vitamins, minerals and macro nutrients that you need to keep you healthy and disease free. You can read about the health benefits of eating paleo here. I cannot guarantee that it will work with you but I will tell you about my experience.

Basically, eating paleo means you restrict your diet to:
  • Lean meats
  • Vegetables
  • Fruit
  • Berries
  • Healthy fats (nuts, avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, etc.)
Which in turn means that you will cut all of the following foods out of your diet:
  • Dairy
  • Grains (bread, pasta, etc.)
  • Legumes (beans and peas)
  • Carbohydrate rich foods (sugar, corn, potatoes, etc.)
Here is an example of the a paleo food pyramid found here (great website by a registered nutritionist discussing the USDA's callous disregard for your health).

At first this list of restrictions looks like it will severely hamper your ability to eat good food but it is not true.

The first resource to help you on your way to eating paleo is Sébastien Noël’s website http://paleodietlifestyle.com/

Sébastien Noël
This website is awesome for someone new to the paleo lifestyle. I would recommend checking out the Paleo 101 and Paleo FAQ sections first. The thing that won me over and helped me make the switch over to paleo were Sébastien’s 370 meal cookbook and 8 week meal plan(here is his tease two week meal plan). It made my conversion to paleo painless. The best part about following Sébastien’s meal plan is the huge variety of tasty meals.

I am on my third week of eating paleo. Things are going well but there are some side effects when you first start the diet. Firstly you may drop a few kilos within the first week. You may experience some side effects. The most obvious side effect that I have had to deal with is the light headedness caused by the reduction of carbs from the diet. However, if you get light headed you can have piece of fruit which makes it go away.

The side effects link above goes to Aglaée Jacob’s website http://www.eat-real-food-paleodietitian.com/ . Aglaée is a nutritionist who follows and blogs about eating paleo. She is a good source of information from a nutritionist’s perspective. She also has a good article to help people who are hesitant about eating fat is her article The Paleo diet is a high-fat diet.
Aglaée Jacob
Finally, I read the Dr. Loren Cordain’s book “The Paleo Diet”. Dr. Cordain introduced the paleo diet to the world. It is a great book that is full of good information and is easy to read. I have his book on my Kindle. Dr. Cordain discusses in depth all of the amazing health benefits from eating paleo and by the end you will never want to quit eating paleo. You can find out more abou the paleo diet at Dr. Cordain's website http://thepaleodiet.com/.

Cordain differs from the two previously mentioned authors about the types of fat that should be consumed when eating paleo. I am personally choosing to err on the side of caution and follow Dr. Cordain’s recommendation to stick to low fat meat and eat only healthy fat. Finally, Dr. Cordain makes a point that this is not a “diet” in the traditional sense. When eating paleo you can eat until you are full and still loose weight. The key is to remember to stick to lean meat, vegetables and fruit.

Vitamin and Mineral Supplements

I would like to finish off discussing vitamin and mineral supplements. According to Dr. Cordain book The Paleo Diet, if you choose to eat paleo you can meet all of your nutritional requirements without supplementation. However, I choose to supplement as a form of insurance. I would rather spend $75 on supplements per month than spend thousands of dollars a month later trying to fix my ill health(cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc). From my experience the supplements at www.deaddoctorsdontlie.com are the best. My favourite choice was the Youngevity Healthy Start Pack. My only problem is that since I live in Australia the shipping is extremely expensive. I have chosen to use Melaleuca’s Vitality 4 as my supplement of choice. Since I am a preferred customer I get a significant reduction in the price. If you would like to find out more about Melaleuca and all of their fantastic natural products just send me an email.

I encourage you to learn all you can about the positive effects of vitamins and mineral and the negative effects of carbohydrates and processed food. Don’t listen to the government about your health. Take what doctors say with a grain of salt and always do your own research and get a second opinion. Better yet see a naturopathic doctor. You are responsible for your body. Love it!

Stand tall,
Cameron Mottus
